the assignments were optional, most students participated in the programs covered by the press. When accepting waiver applications, the State Board should ask local school systems to report on the use of online education programs during the past few months, how good the participation was, and what steps are being taken to encourage those programs going forward. There will be lots of kinks to work out. For example, although many students have online access at home, not everyone does. In addition, during the snow storm thousands of County residents lost power and could not participate in online activities even if they had an Internet connection. online work during school cancellations. However, schools should still be encouraging this type of innovative activity particularly when schools are closed for more than a day. Both teachers and students need that time. The Board of Education can show some welcome flexibility and allow schools to shave days or hours off their requirement.

For decades, this issue has been silenced, suppressed, evaded, and hidden under the foggy, undefined rubber-terms of “conservatism” and “liberalism” which had lost their original meaning and could be stretched to mean all things to all men. It is political philosophy that sets the goals and determines the course of a country’s practical politics. But political philosophy means: abstract theory to identify, explain and evaluate the trend of events, to discover their causes, project their consequences, define the problems and offer the solutions. Politics is based on three other philosophical disciplines: metaphysics, epistemology and ethics—on a theory of man’s nature and of man’s relationship to existence. It is only on such a base that one can formulate a consistent political theory and achieve it in practice. When, however, men attempt to rush into politics without such a base, the result is that embarrassing conglomeration of impotence,

of ink that the Post, the Gazette and this blog have spilled on this issue constitute a gold mine of opposition research, but there is no sign that any of the other candidates have made any real use of it. Just add “passive opponents” to Baker’s long list of reasons for victory and he still looks like a winner. MCPS Superintendent Jerry Weast sent a memo to the Board of Education and an email to MCPS staff on Friday indicating his intention to cut 252 classroom positions in the schools, thereby increasing MCPS class size by one student per class. Weast is taking this step because he anticipates that his budget request will not be fully funded and the school system needs to begin planning its staff allocations for the next school year now. numbers before and this is the first sign of many of their tangible effects on county services. The County Executive is due to present his operating budget proposal next week. Following are Weast’s memo to the Board of Education

then be allowed to carry the Post imprint as franchisees. All of them could be licensed to operate with the Post’s brand. So, for example, the Gazette might be called “Washington Post Maryland. The Post could then sell franchises to many other small operations in its home region and beyond. Its brand would be bigger than ever but its business and employee commitments would be minimal. If one firm under-performed, there would be no need for layoffs or buyouts – just find a competitor, franchise them instead and resume operations. Under the above plan, The Washington Post newspaper would no longer be a centralized organization. It would operate more like a general contractor in the construction industry. It would have a small central staff of editors, supervisors and marketing personnel who would coordinate with a network of smaller subcontractors that produce content and receive the Post imprint. Most important of all, by maintaining revenues and cutting both

involvement in a place in which slave labor is openly used. I guess its funny in a sad sort of way that they’ll rail on corporate America for taking the Christ out of Christmas or the secular and vulgar nature of the entertainment industry, but they won’t speak out about the degradation, oppression, and outright enslavement of humanity that corporate America perpetrates upon the world (or in the case of Dubai rides the backs of those engaged in such acts). They won’t speak out because they have been co opted and bought off by corporate America. When Christianity operates in this capacity; when it serves the interests of the elites of this world, when it becomes the servant of the state; when it becomes an instrument of the rich to oppress the poor - IT HAS BECOME APOSTATE. That’s where it begins! The false doctrine that inevitably follows this condition of things - i. apostasy - is made necessary to mold the church to its new reality as a servant to the rich

Year 2011 budget on March 15, the Safety Net Coalition of Montgomery County will host a Community Forum this Wednesday, March 10, where they will urge elected officials to protect funding for critical health and human services, as demand for assistance continues to rise due to effects of the recession. The Coalition is a broad, grassroots network of more than 65 nonprofits in the county that provide assistance to its most vulnerable residents. With other local jurisdictions across the Washington-metro region also currently working on their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, board executives of Montgomery nonprofits, service providers on the frontlines and individuals who have received assistance will provide personal testimony about why funding nonprofits remains critical, even as governments are tightening their belts for another year. In doing so, nonprofit officials and members of the community will highlight the increasing importance of safety net services as more people are

A resume of professional and civic experience should be included with letters of application. A financial statement of assets, debts, income and family property interests will be required of all applicants. Council staff will contact applicants about the details of the financial statement. Only the candidate appointed will be required to make the financial statement available to the public. a process to allow school systems to receive a waiver from the requirement that they be open for 180 days. Here’s how I think the State Board of Education should determine what counties to grant waivers to. State law sets the minimum length of the school year at 180 days or 1,080 hours (MD ANN CODE EDUC § 7-103 if you are interested in looking it up). Based on data collected last decade, only six states require a longer school year than Maryland:
