DC, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio. Of course, we have a shorter school than many other countries. When there are unforeseen circumstances, such as three massive snow storms, it gets a lot more difficult for the schools to meet the requirement. During my Montgomery County Public Schools days, there were multiple years that days were tacked on to the end of the school year or the school day was lengthened to meet the legal requirement despite the snow. Montgomery County is actually better positioned than many others because it builds four excess days into the calendar in case of snow or other emergencies. Given the weather pounding the state has endured, the state school board is allowing school systems to apply for a waiver from the requirement. State law says a local school board can submit an application describing “a demonstrated effort…to comply” with the requirement. The State Board is authorized to adjust the length of the school year, allow

This means that designing software for group-as-user is a problem that can't be attacked in the same way as designing a word processor or a graphics tool. Our centuries of experience with printing presses and telegraphs have not prepared us for the design problems we face here. We have had real social software for less than forty years (dated from the Plato system), with less than a decade of general availability. We are still learning how to build and use the software-defined conference tables and campfires we're gathering around. When the internet was strange and new, we concentrated on its strange new effects. Earlier generations of social software, from mailing lists to MUDs, were created when the network's population could be measured in the tens of thousands, not the hundreds of millions, and the users were mostly young, male, and technologically savvy. In those days, we convinced ourselves that immersive 3D environments and changing our personalities as often as we changed

Year 2011 budget on March 15, the Safety Net Coalition of Montgomery County will host a Community Forum this Wednesday, March 10, where they will urge elected officials to protect funding for critical health and human services, as demand for assistance continues to rise due to effects of the recession. The Coalition is a broad, grassroots network of more than 65 nonprofits in the county that provide assistance to its most vulnerable residents. With other local jurisdictions across the Washington-metro region also currently working on their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, board executives of Montgomery nonprofits, service providers on the frontlines and individuals who have received assistance will provide personal testimony about why funding nonprofits remains critical, even as governments are tightening their belts for another year. In doing so, nonprofit officials and members of the community will highlight the increasing importance of safety net services as more people are

Only the candidate appointed will be required to make the financial statement available to the public. a process to allow school systems to receive a waiver from the requirement that they be open for 180 days. Here’s how I think the State Board of Education should determine what counties to grant waivers to. State law sets the minimum length of the school year at 180 days or 1,080 hours (MD ANN CODE EDUC § 7-103 if you are interested in looking it up). Based on data collected last decade, only six states require a longer school year than Maryland:
