If the Post is going to charge, it must increase its reporter and editor staffing and endeavor to produce better content. If not, its new revenues will be less than expected and visitors will be driven away. Whatever happens, the awful years of 2008 and 2009 were not a blip. They resulted from the baleful trends of decades. The economic depression merely pushed the storm surge over the levee walls. For better or worse, the company must re-align its business model. Otherwise, we will surely witness the Fall of the Washington Post. Following is an open letter sent by a group of Montgomery County public school teachers to the Post's editorial board about their recent editorials targeting the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA). The letter is not an official communication from the union. Over the course of the past few years many of us who teach in public schools

The Coalition is a broad, grassroots network of more than 65 nonprofits in the county that provide assistance to its most vulnerable residents. With other local jurisdictions across the Washington-metro region also currently working on their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, board executives of Montgomery nonprofits, service providers on the frontlines and individuals who have received assistance will provide personal testimony about why funding nonprofits remains critical, even as governments are tightening their belts for another year. In doing so, nonprofit officials and members of the community will highlight the increasing importance of safety net services as more people are

The Army plans to deliver the first of the NLOS-C prototypes to the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona by December, with four more arriving there by early 2009 and then three more (for a total of eight) later in the year. Work at Yuma will include mobility, safety, reliability, and gun-firing tests. The main gun on the system is a 155-mm howitzer that can fire six rounds per minute. The NLOS-C requires a two-man crew, down from the four soldiers needed for similar existing howitzers, in part because of its fully automated armament system. The Fiscal Times is one of the nontraditional news organizations being created to provide specialized reporting. The Post and other media outlets have begun partnering with them to bolster coverage diminished by staff reductions. But the Post is still marching into the brave new world of outsourcing with predictable consequences to come. Let’s be clear: we do not advocate the above plan. It would be a disaster for readers. Reporters would be more transient than ever. Quality would be more difficult to control in a subcontractor network than in a large office of reporters directly overseen by editors. Coverage would be even more driven by profit than it is now. The Post’s brand name will have far greater reach, but ironically, it will mean far less substantively. That idea has merit because it produces a new revenue stream that, frankly, the Post
